Sixty-nine tartans were illustrated in this reference by William & Andrew Smith of Mauchlin, Scotland, by method of machine painting. In each case the publishers sought to give some authority for the tartans included, be it from a contemporary clan cheif, the tartan manufacturer, or general wont and usage.
